Mayo's hero Itchingham Lofte is a nerdy fourteen year old science geek obsessed with collecting elements from the Periodic Table. Parents reading may be shocked at the elements Itch has managed to obtain samples of, the highly poisonous arsenic for example, but his knowledge and in an emergency his use of the elements is educational and thrilling. At first no one believes him – but soon someone hears about the strange new rock and wants it for himself. Fourteen-year-old Itchingham Lofte, nicknamed Itch, has an unusual passion: collecting specimens of every element in the periodic table. When the group gets back to Seaburgh Lucy begins being questioned by government agents, and Jack must figure out how to occupy Itch's mom so she doesn't get worried. If that weren't enough Greencorp has sent the lady in black to stop them, but Roshanna may have something to say about that.

Itchingham “Itch” Lofte, age 14, has a hobby with unfortunate side effects—not just for himself, but for chums and schoolmates alike.Instead of being appropriately cautious, he carries the radioactive clock hands ( radium) and the radioactive rocks around in his rucksack, exposing himself and the public to this health hazard. At its core, Itch revolves around the relationship of Itch, his younger sister Chloe and his cousin Jacqueline (Jack) as they cope with the problems associated with possessing a radioactive substance the world and his dog would do anything to obtain. I especially liked the Science elemental details that added that nice nerdy touch that makes the character believable. Mayo has always been vocal of his love of the Harry Potter series and some of the disastrous goings on at Cornwall Academy echo some of the more memorable happenings in the classrooms of Hogwarts.

Meanwhile Lucy and Tim visit the former president of Greencorp, Roshanna, and see if she's willing to share any information on their future plans and see if she knows what might be poisoning the water. When Flowerdew threatens to throw Jack into a deep mining well Tim tackles him, throwing them both into the mine well in the process but rescuing Jack. At home, Itch has a tendency to formulate disastrous experiments and the latest explosion not only removed his eyebrows but also got his collection banished to the shed. Perhaps they'll be explored further in another book about Itch, but I don't like it when my interest is piqued then spurned, so I was a little bit irritated.Perhaps in recent years you've heard him as the Drivetime DJ on Radio 2, including the excellent Radio 2 Book Club.
