About this deal

Interestingly, the most believable thing in the novel is the strange creature in the forest and that is because we are given a creepy and scary glance at his development in the prologue.

One thing I like about Cutter is that he is never formulaic; each book of his I have read ( The Troop, The Acolyte, The Deep) are wildly different, transcending the lines from extreme horror to urban fantasy. I have no problems reading about morally ambiguous characters—in fact, I enjoy them, and it’s great when their authors manage to make them sympathetic and likeable.

If you're not a fan of gore or if you're particularly squeamish, then sorry, Little Heaven might not be the book for you. The rest is totally Cutter, which may eventually surprise some or disenchant others, depending on your patience.

That’s not to say there isn’t a lot of blood, guts and gore in this novel, because there is (not to mention, those with a fear of snakes or creepy crawlies will have especially rough time with this one). All the characters were too thinly sketched for my tastes; they were flat, unchanging, and I just didn’t think enough attention was paid to them overall. Again, this is due to his attempt to make this an epic in the grand tradition of King or McCammon, but it just did not work for me.

I could go on and on about why I enjoyed this book, but also want to limit what I give away to potential readers. They have storied histories in their more youthful days of 1965 that contrast well with how they’re established in 1980. The term “old school horror” also seems to get tossed around a lot when discussing this book, which I’d say is pretty spot on.Reading of their coming together as an unlikely trio was fun and established a strong dynamic that prevailed throughout. If you want something that will give you a legitimate scare- then make sure to mark your calendars for January 10, 2017. Edit: apologies for the semi-ironic request for spoiler-free insight, while dropping a spoiler myself! Each of the characters is damaged and after failed attempts to assassinate each other, they join forces to hunt down and rescue this young boy from the compound, Little Heaven. Through it and its underlings the nature of evil is touched upon as well in really interesting ways, though the plot is never overburdened by philosophical waxing.
