About this deal

If you've heard M15, how do they compare to the Cayin RU6, especially with the Viento (or any Moondrop IEM)? While most modern dongles use a delta-sigma DAC implementation, the RU6’s R-2R relies instead on a vast array of discreet components to perform digital-to-analog conversion, in the form of 96 pieces of resistors at 48 per channel with precisely matching parameters. It has a snug fit and soft button covers that don’t overly dampen feedback, a good investment for those worried about scratches. This proved to be very useful as I am using my RU6 with anything from as high as 100db to as low as 91db of sensitivity listening devices with resistances up to 600 Ohm. There are some really good and affordable USB dongles out there from the bigger brands and looking at those probably gives you a 90% on the market and possibilities.

This enables the RU6 to deliver additional power and current, however, channel separation doesn’t match a fully balanced design. I’ve had the RU6 for about two months and I am really enjoying the sound and life it puts into my legacy stereo system. I have never imagined either stepped volume control as well as R-2R to be made possible on a USB-powered dongle design, not even a DAP. With the advent of the R-2R circuit, Cayin RU6 establishes itself as master of the fully-discrete resistor DAC topology in portable audio. It's impressive how Fiio has considered the upgrade path for E7 DAC owners by integrating an iPod-style dock connector into the E9.

The RU6 has a lot of the traditional R-2R sound that I do enjoy, but it's not quite hitting it home with the big desktop setups like my Holo Audio Spring 3, or the Musician Pegasus. Often, the port will loosen over time, so this makes the RU6 a bit more reliable than most competitors. Enthusiasts will be sure to enjoy the RU6’s wide stage and analogue-like note presentation that grant it one of the sweetest and most euphonic sounds I’ve encountered from a portable source yet. And since switching relays introduce an audible pop, Cayin implemented a short delay in volume adjustment as you cross every section by muting that pop. The performance was very satisfying with headphones like the Sennheiser HD660S and the Focal Clear Mg while the gain setting proved very useful for driving more sensitive earphones like the FiiO FA7S.He's a big fan of tube amps and custom inear monitors and has published hundreds of product reviews over the years. In this section of my review, I will go over how various earphones and headphones pair up with RU6, and mention volume setting (v) and gain setting (High Gain or Low Gain).
