About this deal

Backgrounds are minimal, rendered mostly in pale shades, which leaves the focus on the women and helps ground them in history.

The appeal is very much that of [ Goodnight Stories for] Rebel Girls or Frances Lincoln's Little People, Big Dreams series, but this is the only such collection to focus exclusively on black women. It makes a refreshing change to see some pages filled with strong powerful determined achieving Women.

The legends in this book span centuries and continents, but what they have in common is that each one has blazed a trail for generations to come. She then went on to receive her MFA in Film and Video from CalArts where she snuck into Animation classes to learn from Disney and Dreamworks legends. There are lots of familiar names in the book such as: Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and Nina Simone, but there are some lesser known names (to me) so I'll be learning too.

I've been on a quest to find books that aren't entirely full of white heterosexual middle class imagery. I hope to do more events soon, but I am based on the East Coast and may only be able to visit the northeast and midatlantic in the coming months. Some names are known, some are not, but all of the women had a lasting effect on the fields they worked in. I love thinking that they're closing their eyes, looking inside themselves, to step into the shoes of these famous people, emulating their story. It harkens back to classic children's illustrations done by Mary Blair or Mr Happy by Roger Hargreaves. Though it’s a noticeably US-focused selection, there are British women featured among the 50 too, such as Diane Abbot, Tessa Sanderson and Shirley Bassey, which is nice to see.

This is my debut book, so I'm definitely new to the world of publishing and may not be able to provide all of the answers. I wanted to see black girls treated with the same sweetness as classic characters like that inspire me!Sometimes non-fiction is also a fantastic way to tempt a reluctant reader into sitting down with a book.

Readers will meet trailblazing women like Mary Blair, an American modernist painter who had a major influence on how color was used in early animated films, actor/inventor Hedy Lamar, environmental activist Wangari Maathai, architect Zaha Hadid, filmmaker Agnes Varda, and physicist Chien-Shiung Wu. An important book for readers of all ages, this beautifully illustrated and engagingly written volume brings to life true stories of black men in history. It resulted in this beautiful and profound book, which chronicles the struggles and achievements of historic and contemporary black women. The charming, information-filled full-color spreads show the Leaders as both accessible and aspirational so reader knows they, too, can grow up to do something amazing.Among these biographies, readers will find heroes, role models, and everyday women who did extraordinary things.
