About this deal

Seconds later two police cars followed in hot pursuit, sirens away, the last one pausing long enough to pick up Jack, who leapt in like a boy. He is also the author of Trout Madness, People Versus Kirk, and Laughing Whitefish, among other works. Interesting to see everthing that goes into the process, but all that d

What follows is one of the most brilliant courtroom dramas of all time, as Polly puts together his defence and minutely examines the seething emotions under the placid surface of his town. But it isn't enough that a jury might sympathize with Manion morally: how can he be defended legally?May have some underlining and highlighting of text and some writing in the margins, but there are no missing pages or anything else that would compromise the readability or legibility of the text. In this case the Jimmy Stewart movie made from this is a distillation of the best of the novel, or put another way, the book is like a deeper immersion into the film. Traver delivers straightforward literature; articulate, intelligent and expecting the same of his reader. The aforementioned philosophical conversations are fascinating, of course, but the on-going banter between Biegler and his law partner never failed to delight.

Our defense attorney and the narrator of the story, Paul Beigler, needs to win this case for a couple of reasons. The second half is 250 pages of courtroom drama, and the details are exhausting, with some more hammy dialogue thrown in. It was okay when I pictured Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch while I was reading To Kill a Mockingbird. century feminist prickliness has to be firmly suppressed; all the tv and movie images of young and zealous lawyers working flat out eighteen hours a day to get their clients acquitted have to be put aside. The other images from popular media, though, the ones of lawyers seizing on any slender possibility that could remotely work in their favor? On the other hand, I can see the actor who played the main character in Anatomy of a Murder doing a good job, but I’m glad that I didn’t visualize him. The prosecution – trying to set the victim in as positive a light as possible – has no problem dismissing the rape as either irrelevant or imaginary, whichever's more convenient, and to tarnish her reputation in any way possible; the defense is concerned that Laura's beauty might tell against them, but otherwise is determined to stick her on the stand come what may. Lots of humor, banter, jockeying for the upper hand between the defense and the prosecution, and asides on the beauty and necessity of our legal system, it is more than just a novel about a murder trial.

Voelker, an avid fly fisherman and lifelong resident of the community where this novel is set, had a wit and intelligence that shined throughout these 450 pages and kept the story from bogging down. side by side with the sort of fervent idealism Jimmy Stewart should have had a patent on … again, whoever was at the helm, it's the perfect 50's movie. Even though the book is 19 hours long, it went by so quickly that it seemed like a much shorter book. Then to the courtroom and the surprise assistant Lodwick produces — tricky Claud Dancer of the State Attorney General's office; the surprise — and unexpected pleasure — of an unfamiliar judge who is not only learned but humane and touched with humor; the horn-locking of defense and prosecution; the touch and go as one, then the other, leads up to, pounds home, insinuates or makes clear, his points — and on to the climax of the jury's decision. The Michigan supreme court reports and all my other law books stood on narrow shelves against an entire wall, completely hidden by drawn monk-cloth drapes--largely, I suspect, because it made me nervous to contemplate so many religiously unread books.
